I have both Numbers and Excel installed on my Mac. How do I make Numbers the default application for opening Excel documents?

The same applies to using Pages as the default for Word, text, RTF, etc. |

If you have Microsoft Office installed on your Mac, it will be the default application for opening files with the .xls and .xlsx extensions. But what if you want these files opened by Numbers by default? Changing the default application for a file type in Mac OSX is easy. Simply right (or control) click on the file and select “Get Info”. In the “Open with:” pane, select Numbers. Next click the “Change All” button and all Excel files will now open by default in Numbers. An alternative to changing the default application – if you only wish to open an Excel file in Numbers from time to time – would be to right (or control) click on the file and choose the “Open With” option, then select Numbers.
