I love my Macs, but I also use Windows a great deal of time, and to a lessor extent, Ubuntu Linux. I'm looking for some ideas as to the best way to share files between each OS.

I want a network based solution, so I'm thinking a Windows file share may be the best answer.

I also want it to be local, so Drop Box, while it is awesome, is not a contender.

What are the possible solutions I may be overlooking?

I think a good idea can be a network disk (or a little NAS). You can buy a NAS (but it is moderately expensive) or you can connect a disk to a little "file server" and build yourself a really inexpensive NAS combining a small linuxbox and a USB disk or buying a little NAS enclosure. Another good solution is to use a router with the capability of sharing an USB disk. You can do this easily with Airport extreme or Time Capsule but I know other cheap router with USB port for HD sharing, like this: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/WRT160NL.

Hope this is useful. Bye Antonio
